Walking Meditation
Posted in Meditation on 02/17/2009 12:48 am by adminI have just recently rediscovered it through Thich Nhat Hanh’s Walking Meditation Book, CD & Video. I had bought this wonderful little gem about a year and a half ago. It has just been sitting on my bookshelf waiting for the right time to enter my consciousness. I have really enjoyed this study and I am looking forward to going into this further as a regular practice outside! Here is a link to get this book from my Metaphysical Store.
Here is a nice preparatory exercise to do before actually doing any moving or walking:
Sit comfortably with your spine straight. Now put a Buddha half smile on your face just like the one on the Buddha statues. I want you to feel that angelic smile throughout your whole body. Now breathe in the Buddha smile deeply and exhale all of your stress. Again in Buddha smile and out stress and negatives. One more time, in Buddha smile and out stress!
Next we do ten breaths. Breathe in and say to yourself “in one” and exhale and say to yourself “out one”. Keep counting and doing that until you have completed ten breaths. All that matters is the counting and your breath, that is all of your focus.
Next keep this very relaxed and focused feeling as you get up. Take a few moments to center yourself standing and keep that meditative feeling. Then take three contemplative steps to one breath in and three contemplative steps to one breath out. So your breath to step ratio is 3/1. You can adjust this ratio until it’s comfortable for you. You could do 2 steps per inhalation or exhalation. Play around with it until you find your own rhythm. Keep your posture in mind as you breath and step. Your head should be up, eyes slightly focused downward and spine straight. Let flowers grow from under your feet and place peace upon the earth with each step you take. Namaste!!
